Airedale General Hospital was built largely from reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is now crumbling. Airedale was one of five English hospitals parachuted into the rebuilding programme in 2023 when the extent of the RAAC crisis emerged.

Gleeds is also project manager for the for the £1bn redevelopment of Leighton Hospital in Crewe, one of the other five RAAC infested hospitals.
Andrew McNulty, Gleeds’ UK head of healthcare, said: “Gleeds has extensive experience in delivering complex health projects and we have seen first-hand the enormously positive impact they can have on communities. Having overseen the delivery of similar large-scale projects across the UK in recent years, we’re looking forward to sharing best practice and supporting our client and their surrounding community throughout this project.”
Gleeds’ director responsible for the project is John Walker. He said: “As someone who lives locally, having the opportunity to secure the future of Airedale Hospital is a real privilege and I look forward to collaborating with the project team as we get works underway.”
