Walsall Council secured £11.4m funding from the Future High Street Fund back in 2021 and began construction on the first phases of its Connected Gateway project began at the end of 2024, with the downstairs area of the Saddlers shopping centre being remodelled.
Kier is expected to be on-site in late autumn 2025 to begin the major renovation and remodelling of Park Street in Walsall town centre, including the demolition of some buildings to create an open walkway between the bus and railway stations.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, acting leader of Walsall Council, said: “I’m pleased that we have Kier on board to deliver this major regeneration scheme for Walsall Town Centre. It’s important for us to make sure people have a good experience when they come to Walsall and improving the aesthetics of the town centre will have a really positive impact. I look forward to seeing the transformation start to take shape next year.”
Mark Dady, managing director of Kier Construction Eastern & Midlands, said: “This venture will improve access to two key transport hubs and upgrade visitor experience, which will increase footfall and boost the local economy. Repurposing the main shopping centre will positively transform the town for locals, as well as supporting future growth and regeneration.”
Completion of the scheme is expected in 2027.
