Premier Modular is providing King’s Academy Bay House School in Gosport with a four-storey temporary classroom block to support a major estate redevelopment.

The manufacturer is working with main contractor Kier, through the Department for Education’s school rebuilding programme.

The prefabricated temporary buildings will enable school operations while the redevelopment progresses.

Bay House School was in the first round of 50 schools selected for the school rebuilding programme back in February 2021. Glenigan listed the contract as worth £25m to Kier in 2023 in its listings. Enabling works finally began on site on 3rd January 2025.

The redevelopment will see six buildings and two temporary classrooms demolished, three redesigned blocks constructed and the retained buildings refurbished.

Premier Modular will install 133 modular units, which will make up 44 classrooms that will be in use by the school for two-and-a-half years. By having stackable units, there will still be outdoor space for pupils during the building works.

Premier Modular says that a  unique aspect of this project is the phased use of its building, with two design specifications required over the course of the two and half year period. After the first year and a half, the classrooms will be converted to suit evolving needs on site, including changing design and technology space into science labs. Premier Modular will carry out an internal reconfiguration of the building in line with the second design on site.

This is Premier Modular’s second largest education project to date in an education environment across four storeys. Its largest is the supply of 186 modules to Greenshaw High School in Sutton, south London, where Bowmer & Kirkland is leading a redevelopment.

Premier Modular rental divisional director Mark Rooney said of the Gosport job: “This is a groundbreaking project for us. Not only is it our second largest temporary school build, but thanks to the ability to stack modular units, we can provide an innovative solution to maximise space in a busy environment. Working closely with Kier, we’ve created the design to align with the project’s evolving needs, ensuring a solution that works for all.”
