The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust has secured funding for an all-new hospital, with construction expected to start in 2027-28.

The new hospital will be built on the site of the existing hospital’s main car park, so a new multi-storey car park is being built to make way for the new development, effectively as enabling works.

RG Carter has been awarded an £18m contract for the new multi-storey car park, which will have 1,310 spaces. It is being built on the site of the hospital’s Inspire Centre, which was demolished in 2023.

The contract award follows confirmation from the government last month of a funding envelope of £1bn to £1.5bn for the planned New Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The existing hospital needs replacing because of the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) used in its construction is now crumbling.

Construction work on of the multi-story car park is set to start in early 2026, enabling the new hospital to be built on the current main car park.
