Skanska will replace the Clifton rail bridge that spans the M6 motorway near Penrith.
The existing bridge will be demolished and replaced with a new 130-metre single span steel structure. The new bridge will be built alongside the existing structure, before being installed over a 10-day period early January 2026.
Existing bridge support structures will be re-used, reducing programme timescales, cost and resultant carbon emissions.
The 60-year-old bridge, which takes trains over the M6 between the north of England and Scotland, has reached the end of its life, and needs to be replaced. Currently, only one train at a time is allowed on the bridge, which causes delays for passengers and freight services.
Construction works have started and the project is scheduled for completion in March 2026.
